Sean Yazbeck Comments on Celebrity Apprentice, Episode Two

Blog ImageIt was only Episode Two, yet the candidates were already doing what Apprentice contenders always do. Some were stepping up, while others were acting up. Some were supporting their teammates, while others were trying to shoot them down.

Let me share some of my opinions about Episode Two.

You Need to Balance Structure and Creativity

Scott and Tom were on the two opposite sides of that mental spectrum. To win a task on The Apprentice, you need really need to utilize both.

Scott was organized and structured - but lacked creativity. Tom, on the other hand, had an abundance of creativity - and maybe not so much structure.

A leader needs to not only recognize his team’s strengths, but also recognize his or her own weaknesses. A more experienced leader than Scott would have better engaged, utilized and managed the relationship with Tom. Scott should have been able to channel Tom’s energy and creativity more positively. Rolling his eyes only worsened Scott’s situation. And if he really found it that frustrating to have Tom around, he should have found a task - any task - that involved sending him across town for a few hours.

Tom’s not stupid. He saw that Scott was giving him the cold shoulder, and it made things worse.

Learn to Lead Under Stress

Scott’s lack of leadership and direction induced more stress for the men’s team. They were stuck in limbo for hours. In these circumstances, when you often can’t see the forest for the trees, you need to take time out. Get out of that room for 20 minutes. Go outside. Have a cup of tea. Go smoke a fag. Clear your mind and then return.

Part of this comes with experience. In a corporate environment, you are often exposed to stress, and you learn how to handle it. After a certain amount of time, you take the rough with the smooth. The highs aren’t so high and lows not so low.

Perhaps Scott would have done well to apply all the stress-management skills he learned as a competitive skater. He certainly knows about stress and how to focus and cut out distractions. There is a message in that for all of us - the same coping skills we learn outside our jobs can help us in our professional lives too, so we shouldn’t cast them aside.

Leverage the Value from Presentations

Tom was not involved in preparing his team’s presentation, but then he was asked at the 11th hour to be his team’s spokesperson. His performance shows that his presentation skills are very strong. Well done, Tom!

On the women’s side, however, the fact that there were multiple professional TV presenters not willing to take the place of Claudia, who was clearly ill, shows that the psychological games have already started. Nobody wanting to volunteer meant that no one wanted to put herself at the risk of failing. It also showed that the women would rather see Claudia slip up than risk a personal setback.

Adopt a Long-Range Strategy

Before I won the Apprentice, I kept my head down as much I could in the early weeks before stepping up and embracing challenges. It’s a marathon, not a race that involves a lot of psychology, passive-aggressive relationships and positioning.

It may not always seem like that on TV. But believe me, there’s plenty of it going on.

I look forward to watching next week and sharing my opinions with you here. Please add your comments to this post, and your observations too. I know we are all going to learn a lot from this exciting season.

As winner of The Apprentice (2006), Sean Yazbeck, was selected by Donald Trump to oversee construction of the 5 star hotel condominium, Trump SoHo, in New York City. Yazbeck's role included overseeing negotiations on all acquisitions and purchases for this $500 million project.

Yazbeck has since been working with the Trump Institute to set-up WAVSYS, a national technical staffing company providing individuals, project teams and strategic outsourcing services for engagements in IT and telecommunications. As Founder and CEO, WAVSYS leverages Yazbeck's 12-years of unrivaled recruitment expertise, for which he was awarded the EB1 Green Card for "persons of extraordinary ability".

In 2006, in recognition of his multiple achievements the mayor of Miami Dade County, Carlos Alvarez, named June 20th, as "Sean Yazbeck Day" in Miami-Dade County. More recently in 2008 the Governor of Kentucky, Steve Beshear, bestowed the honory title of "Kentucky Colonel" on Sean Yazbeck "in recognition of noteworthy accomplishments and outstanding service to the nation".

Since winning The Apprentice, Yazbeck has appeared as Boardroom Advisor to Mr. Trump on The Apprentice, hosted his own show, Reality Trailblazers, on the TV Guide Channel and has appeared on numerous shows such as Miss Universe, MTV Video Music Awards, Live with Regis and Kelly, 1 vs. 100, Soap Talk and Identity.

Yazbeck graduated top of his year with a First Class Honors Degree from Southampton Solent University in England. A British national, he is due to gain dual American Citizenship in 2010.

I agree that Scott should have had a focus for Tom to subdue his boundless energy, could of sent him with Jesse to design the costume. The men were acting more like children and when you want to divert the useless energy to positive you need to take charge of the group and deligate. There are many egos that need to be checked at the door! However, Scott's biggest problem was missing the mark with "EEE" instead of honing in on the product itself of "Zappo's" - their presentation was a smoother show than the women and I could relate to the men's version. Love the show - I don't know how Mr. Trump puts up with some of the bickering!

I have watched the last two episodes of Celebrity Apprentice and I am amazed how stress can bring out the best or worst in people. I think that great leadership is a skill that people can develop over time. There was something lacking in the leadership styles of both Hershel Walker and Scott Hamilton. The inability to listen to their team mates, especially during critical brain storming sessions. It appeared as though the communications within the women's group was going in the same direction. There were a few gaffs and some display of egos gone amuck, but, for better or worse the ladies got it together and pulled off a stunning victory.
I was especially proud of "the little ninja", Natalie Gulbis. She kept her cool in that silly outfit, but, got a reaction from the owner of Z webstore. I hope that he appreciated the candor. If you don't have honest dialogue there can never be progress.

I was absolutely amazed at Scott's ability to pull off this task. The men's team was ridiculous- the women's team flowed like silk. The men's team came up with ridiculous idea after riduculous idea and was absolutely not taking this seriously at all- even after the artists arrived. Finally, Scott heard one good idea out of this pathetic bunch and ran with it. In the eleventh hour, with almost no time left, Scott's team came up with a much better presentation than the women's team. The comic was better, the presentation was better, the story line was better, the costume was far and away the best. My guess is that they had so little time that they had to let the artists do most of the creative work. I really feared for the women's team.

I really loved the slogan Scott came up with but he needed to do just one thing put a Z in front. Every thing, Every time, Every one. That was powerful. All he had to do was put a Z in front. Zappos- Every time, Every time, Every one. ZEEE! It also prolongs the Z sound and gives it more emphasis.

Tom should have gone home for putting his need to have all the attention way ahead of the task. I knew that he would stay when he issued the challenge- that he would be the project manager next week. It helped him survive one more week but sealed his fate. There is no project manager in the bunch able to pull these men together at all. If the men win anything it will be because the women fall apart- and then we should all give up on the season because it is no fun to watch a bunch of pathetic losers act like pathetic losers. It will be good to see Tom try to accomplish a task that he made a living hell when Scott was project manager. I think that Scott was relieved to leave. As you said, you need both structure and creativity and the structure just went home.

I was glad to see Claudia do so well this week- even while being sick! Go Claudia- win lots of money for NAPSAC and help raise awareness on the issue of child sexual abuse. We spend a lot more time trying to punish the perpetrators than we do trying to help the victims. Punishing people never does any good- it just compounds the problem, making their lives more miserable- and forcing them to find a way to end that misery- which for some will be more child abuse. We need to find solutions that work. Until then, the emphasis should be on the survivors, helping them grow up straight and strong.

Sean glad to see you posting commentary. Glad to see that you are doing so well. You are still my favorite Apprentice- a real master of the game!

If your audience is to believe that the behavior of the Celebrity Apprentices is acceptable for a brand like Trump then it is easy to understand why too many students today don't show a great deal of respect for their teachers in the classroom.

I always thought that ladies and gentlemen addressed each other with dignity and respect regardless of their backrounds in business, music, sports or comedy.

What I saw was a mismanaged group of "loud mouths" that could use some much needed lessons from Miss Manners.

So far, the only one's on the show that act respectable are Don Jr., Ivanka, and Erin Burnett.
Mr. Trump didn't really need to tell us he tried to pick up the Playboy Celebrity and didn't score. She didn't even remember him. Not exactly a great image for a former Playboy like him.

I think the real issue here is the inability for grown-ups to act like business people.

Great to see Sean back!

A lot of girls just love Sean! Lol

Great article! And we agree that Scott did not have the group in-tuned to leadership and to it's project control.

Which Blog is better? Seans or Randals?

Too much in the blogs and should be high-lighted with the TrumpU blog...

Great show!
