This Week: Some Advice for the Contestants Who Remain

At the end of Episode Nine last week, only seven contenders remained. Instead of commenting on the tasks we saw last week, I’d like to take my commentary this week in a different direction, by offering each of the remaining contestants a few suggestions on how to improve their positions in the weeks ahead - and perhaps even come out as the ultimate winner.

Let’s talk about them in alphabetical order:

  • Annie - Annie, you are a poker champion. That means you can accurately assess your current situation (the cards you are holding), weigh risks (what can go wrong) and then make and follow a strategic plan that maximizes your strengths and minimizes your weaknesses. I would urge you to apply a similar process now. You have great strengths. You can raise a lot of money. You have a very warm personality when you turn it loose. You are highly intelligent. The negative side is that you are sometimes so assertive that you anger people. That is the hand you are playing with. Your job at this point is to find the best way to play it.
  • Brande - You are a little self-effacing, a bit too willing to stand in the shadows while other people lead. Yet I must say that because you are still alive at this point in the season, you have a lot more strength as a leader than you probably recognize. (And therefore, more than other people realize too.) Step into leadership positions more aggressively in the weeks ahead. You have what it takes. But you can’t win by following someone else across the finish line.
  • Clint - You are a terrific contender with a magnetic personality. Yet you have made some mistakes you need to address if you are to win. Specifically, you have shown that you make bad decisions (as in that All video you made) and shut other people out. Unless you showcase some inclusive people skills in the coming weeks, you will probably not come out as the winner. It’s not complicated - you simply have to show that you possess better people skills. You can do it, but will you?
  • Jesse - You have been the strong quiet man of the season, with great success. People respect and like you. But if you are going to win the season, you need to do a bit more than that. You need to find a way to not just survive, but score a major success in one task - a high-dollar win. And one more thing. Why not ditch the jeans and flannel shirt for just one week? Granted, Mr. Trump believes in substance over style. But you could add to your credibility by showing just once that you can look like a leader. If you showed up in a suit, you would absolutely wow people.
  • Joan - You jumped in to save the day with KOTU’s jewelry presentation last week. A few weeks ago, you jumped in to be a great concierge during your team’s hotel project. Yet to show that you are a real leader, you need to step out and show your business and planning skills too. You have built a major career. You have run companies. Now show us how you have done those things. And another thing - reel in your emotions. Mr. Trump admires people with level heads.
  • Melissa - At this point in the season, you have established yourself as overly emotional. I can’t even point out all the times you have allowed people to see you get upset - times when others have attacked your mother, when you felt that your business skills were not noticed by your teammates, times when you felt that other people were conspiring against you. All that static has made it hard to notice that you have excelled with specific tasks. So now is the time to control your emotions and score several major wins that cannot be missed. If you can accomplish that, there are reasons to be optimistic about your chances of winning.

As I look back at this season, I would also like to say that a few contestants seemed to exit the scene too early. Scott Hamilton seemed like a leader to me. So did Tionne. But good people sometimes fall by the wayside in business earlier than they ought to. Your job in your career is to keep that from happening to you.

One thing for certain is that only one celebrity will be standing when this season ends. And the coming weeks are certain to be very interesting indeed.

I realize the contestants have to be an entertaining mix, but it would be interesting to know the selection process and criteria used to attract and then select the participants.

Donald,

You made a big mistake this week in choosing to fire Melissa. You appeared to base it solely on her ability or inability to raise money rather than her performance on the task. Brandy was the clear choice to be fired. I don't care that she got angry in the board room and made a promise that she cannot keep. Temper does not a leader make. So, in my book, Donald . . . you're fired!!!!

I am very disappointed with this episode. I don't think that the right person got fired. Personally I loved watching Joan Rivers, she's fantastic and I hope she comes back next week.

Trump, I like the show, I like the concept but personally I think you lost a large audience with this firing. It was obviously favoritism on your part and I don't blame Melissa for storming out. I'd have probably done worse.

If this wasn’t the "celebrity" version, you wouldn’t have fired Melissa Rivers, she didn’t deserve to go.

You might have said on CNN you were picked up for another 2 seasons by NBC but IMHO, if this is how you decide to fire people, I’ll stop watching and tell everyone I know how manipulated your show really is.

Good luck Trump, you might need it.

No leadership nuggets here. Remaining contestants should read Dale Carnegie's book "How to Win Friends and Influence People". Attacking people by name calling only shows the need for more education the world of Business Leadership. Message for Joan - Poker Players paid your way to fame.

I have worked in Marketing and Sales for over 15 years and have been a fan of the show for YEARS. After watching the last show, and reflecting back over the last few seasons I have now changed my mind. It appears that the message put out in the world by this how is that no matter what tactics you use, at the end of the day it is all about MONEY. IN business money is of course important, but it should not rule all decisions. It's like Suzy Orman....people first, money second, things last. I am tired of seeing reality TV more and more, letting the snakes win. Joan Rivers said things that should not have been said, but it was very much like watching a mother tiger taking care of her young. It's inbred in mothers and she was pushed to say things out of emotional anger. Donald, you are just looking at whoever can stack the most dollar bills on the table and I am sorry, but that is what is disgusting Americans today about big corporate greed. So I am not watching the finale of this show or future shows. It's time for me to say, YOUR FIRED!

Good choice to get rid of Melissa. Assuming you get the time to review the tape you will see that Brande is a genuine person. Business requires genuine people. She stood up for herself when necessary, but business is about deal making and cooperation, not just competition.

If Annie could shut her mouth and learn to listen, she may actually win.

This show sucks. All Mr. Trump is into are woman that take their clothes off. Look at his own daughter who is just a puppet of her dad. If you are so educated, then why allow your own daughter to get a massive boob job. How do a playboy playmate and a poker player qualify as a celebrities? I definitely think Mr. Trump fired the wrong people as he does every season. This show does not teach people about working hard and having good business skills. It shows people to manipulate and step on people to get ahead. That seems to be what Mr. Trump epitomizes in people.

Donald,

The charitable contributions your contestants raise do not count. You should be embarrassed to show your face given the charitable contributions your organization makes during these episodes. They aren't even chump change.

This addressed mainly to Mr. Trump:
Last night's episode was an utter disappointment (much like the week Chloe got fired). Clearly the one to go home should have been the dumb blonde! She stepped back and let her friend "The Queen of slogans and The Queen of Presentations" And the best part was even Ivanka had it figured out !-Melissa should have not been fired- and why did you Mr. Trump , when you realized she couldn't have been fired for her performance on that task- turn it all around to fund raising--then you and Cramer just turned on her---Shame on you-Cramer , why was he even there! And for the rest of those remaining - I'm pulling for Jesse or Joan!! Jess is quiet, but deadly and so cute! Joan-she is New York!! Love you Joan---
I don't know Mr. Trump you are looking quite foolish this year. Both Chloe and Melissa are better off and look more professional than you do!! Go Joan and Jesse!!!!

Donald,
I agree with the others - you were way off on this one and the wrong person got fired this week.
I do think Melissa acted inappropriate after being fired but she was pissed!! She did exactly what was asked of her on the task. Brande either let Annie have too much power or Annie took it. If you watch the clip where Jim Cramer visits the group, it's almost sickening how Annie is all me, me, me. She had total control of the task and lost....she needed to be fired - or Brande for allowing her to have too much control. I really can't believe that Jim didn't mention the me, me, me, incident more. I felt you based your decision not on the task at hand but the overall picture of who could raise more money. If that's the case, why even have tasks...why not put everyone in a room and have them make phone calls to raise money. Your way off of this one Donald.

I think episode 9 was absolutely fantastic and the greatest reality episode I have ever viewed on television! I think Mr. Trump made the right decision because Melissa's focal point in the Boardroom was solely on how the two women were becoming business buddies, and were ostracizing her rather than using her (again and again) gifted talents. Of course Annie Duke had the right to be vexed by Melissa's attitude and feelings about her. Her mother stated actually how Melissa felt about Annie all the while whereas Melissa would not ever confront Annie about how she felt only until Brandie brought it to Annie's attention Melissa knowing that Brandie would speak about what was said between them about Annie. Time and time again Melissa spoke about Annie whereas the other teammates didn't. Melissa strategically got TBoz off the show. I'm quit sure that TBoZ ment that if Melissa needed support and backup of creditability as a project manager that she would give her respected and supported props. Melissa, the first thing she did was call TBoz name out! She never called out the two teammates that should go before the Boardroom as making the least effort to perform the task at hand. Look at the real Melissa that really showed her real self. Bossy, she's the one that should be used for a specific task all the time, and if you had not listen to her, well, then she is gunning for you. On the show she kind of showed us how she is as a real boss, you'd better listen to her or else. As I see it, her mother should have been asked to come on the show as a celebrity, not her daughter. I feel sorry for Joan to have seen the comments about her daughter, but the black lady told the truth about Melissa.

What a disappointment. This show is not what it used to be. Integrity, working hard, ambitions, personal goals. Now it has come to who you know and how much money they give. NOT RIGHT!! Also when Kloe was fired, it was strickly personal with Donald. The show says, ITS BUSINESS-NOT PERSONAL... I am afraid it has become personal. Shame on you Don. Let's get back to business!!!

Donald: What were you thinking firing Melissa? Here's a question- Why didn't Cramer speakup about his visit to their team where he witnessed the Me-Me tirade from Annie Duke? She TOOK over that project, and then very carefully backed off of the project when she realized in the boardroom they had lost. Annie Duke should have gone home or at least Brandie! Its amazing Annie doesn't take credit for the creation of the heavens and earth!! I have really seen a different side to that woman and my message to Brandie (Miss. Deer-In-The Headlights) is she better watch her back with Annie. Joan may have a been a little verbal- but she she was on track with her assessment of those 2. And yes, Melissa was right-it was like HighSchool and they were shutting her out. Does anyone on Mr. Trump's staff watch those clips??
You know I wasn't going to watch this season, then got pulled into it, and now I'm upset for wasting the power in my home on that show. I agree with the other person who wrote, "Mr. Trump- you're fired!"
Go Jesse.!! You can win this!

My only advice for the remaining contestants is not to act like a fool if you are fired! Joan and Melissa Rivers have shown just how low-class they are. Melissa is definitely a spoiled brat who is very use to getting her way. After being fired, she did everything but lay on the floor and kick her feet!
