Are you stuck in a Dip?
For those of you that don't know I am a big
Seth Godin fan. Some might say a groupie... I read his books, blogs and when possible go and hear him speak. Today I had the privilege to hear him on his
NYC Dip Tour. As always the presentation and the content were excellent.
Most businesses go through a growth dip and Seth does a great job outlining this business phenomenon and discusses the process of getting through the dip and prospering.
Here are a few key take-a-ways from this morning's seminar: (I recommend
buying the book
to get the full story and to truly understand The Dip.)
- There is a shortage of superstars - if you are a superstar you are in high demand and people will find you (provided you are an expert and can be found).
- 'The Best in the World' is not marketing copy or something you determine. This statement is up to your customers. If they believe you are the best in the world they will tell others who will then believe the statement.
- With that said - you should aim to be the Best in the World and not average. The world has enough average people.
- Create your 'World'. If you sell real estate then your world is real estate sales. Anything outside of real estate is not your world. You should aim to be the best in the world at real estate sales. Also, if you concentrate on a geographic area, then your world is the city, state, etc. you specialize in.
- Be Remarkable and buzz worthy. If you are then sales will follow.
- Quitting is a strategy but you need to know when to quit and when it pays to push through the dip. There are times you can succeed by quitting.
Is your business in a dip? Can you push through the dip and prosper or should you quit and move on to something else? You know your business but if you could use some inspiration check out
The Dip
.

There, I admitted it. And I'm proud of it. Nothing gets my marketing brain whirring faster than reading, or listening, to Seth. If you want a clear, inspiring, insightful vision of what marketing can and should be, read anything by him. I particularly recommend Purple Cow, where he presents the idea that to succeed these days, you must be remarkable, i.e., worthy of having people talk about you/your product/your company in a positive way.
I am fan of Seth Godin already for a long time. I have seen and listened to his presentations. His suggestions for excellence are great. But I am sure, many people won't digest so easily the concept of completely leave back mediocrity. But it definitely motivates to strive for excellence.
