The Girl Scouts are Great Marketers

Blog Image

The Girl Scout cookie sale is off and running. I was approached to buy some cookies when it occurred to me that the Girl Scouts are great marketers.

Just think about this for a minute.

  • The brand is easily recognizable
  • They have a sales force of thousands of willing and eager girls (and their families) running around the country selling
  • This sales force creates product placement that can't be beat
  • They sell huge quantities of their product with almost no overhead
  • There is a sense of scarcity - only sold a few weeks a year
  • The product selection and pricing model is simple to understand and communicate
  • Almost everyone has a favorite flavor so the purchase decision is easy
  • The product sells itself because of the machine they have built over the years
  • Their product is nostalgic for many so people buy them for the memories
  • No fancy promotions or offers are needed to generate sales

This is marketing at its finest...

What other school or organizational fund raisers have as much success as the Girl Scouts?

The big question for marketers is how can you turn your business into a Girl Scout sales and marketing machine?

So how many boxes did you buy this year?

I must agree that the Girl Scouts are some of the best marketers out there. I bought 5 boxed of Thin Mints so they must be doing something right!

Only 5...? You got off easy.

Enjoy the thin mints and thanks for reading.

Another point...

People are so convinced of their rarity (including my own mother) that they will purchase boxes for their children or relatives and disperse them as gifts, assuming there was a slight chance that the girl scouts skipped their block this season.

This means that each individual customer is potentially 2-10 "virtual customers"!

Trent,
That is an excellent point. Someone in my office bought 20 or so boxes. Who wouldn't love virtual customers at a zero cost of acquisition?

The best part is, they have alot of fun selling them. This weekend I met a
couple of Girl Scouts waiting outside of the grocery store. Even AFTER people
shopped inside the store, many reached into their wallet and paid for the "rare"
cookies that they couldn't buy from the shelf. Good job, girls!

I call that strategic marketing, and out of the box thinking!
